Adult Belt Ranks

Adult Belt Ranking System

Overview: At Grapplers Elite stripes are awarded through competition performance. After earning four stripes one is considered under review for a belt promotion. The belt advancement is always based on ones self defense application of the technique.
Stripes: Each Belt Promotion has 2 Basic Requirements
Competition Performance (earn 4 stripes)
Self Defense Application (belt advancement)

White Belt

Overview: A white belt student should focus on mastery of our CORE skills. CORE stands for COmbat REady, and we really mean it. White belt CORE skills include the most essential principles and movements of jiu-jitsu, and their applications in self defense. You will largely be able to predict how an opponent will react in a confrontation. Master this and an average size person would be ready to handle 90-95% of situations they might encounter and can expect to do it with confidence. Plan to rotate through our whole CORE Curriculum at least 3-4 times before being ready for Blue Belt.
Stripes: Stripes 1 & 2 are earned by placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a competition of about 6-8 competitors.
Stripes 3 & 4 require placing 1st in competition of about 6-8 competitors.

Blue Belt

Overview: A Blue Belt should continue to focus on mastery of CORE skills and on expanding on those skills for a more complete application to self-defense. Drill the basics thousands of times, remember you will be far more effective as a “master of the basics” than a “Jack of all trades”.
Stripes: For Blue Belt and beyond each stripe is earned by accumulating 10 points in competition. Points are based off of placing first in competition, and by successful submissions in competition.

Purple, Brown & Black Belts

Overview: A Purple Belt in Jiu-Jitsu is about the equivalent of a Black Belt in most martial arts. I could go into more detail but suffice it to say, at this level you should really begin to expand your Jiu-Jitsu understanding. Choose areas to work on and master those areas. Help lower ranked students, at this level your ability to coach and help others succeed becomes more and more important. Teaching is the second highest level of learning, second only to application. So, if you haven't already, volunteer to help with some of the lower classes. Don't neglect the basics or Jiu-Jitsu's application to self-defense, but really begin to master elements that will bring you the most success.
Stripes: For Blue Belt and beyond each stripe is earned by accumulating 10 points in competition. Points are based off of placing first in competition, and by successful submissions in competition.
